In
June of 1987 I moved out on my own... I rented the first floor of an old
Victorian house with high ceilings and big rooms, in a beautiful historic
village tucked into the foothills of western Pennsylvania. I loved
it there, but I soon got lonely. And in October of that year, Jake
came to live with me.
Jake's
registered name is Gaelic, and it means "Shepherd from
Edinburgh." I chose it because of his Scottish heritage, and
the collie talent for herding.
Jake
went through rough times and prosperous times with me in that little
town... there were months in the beginning when the only things to eat in
the house were tomato sandwiches and dog food. His loving
personality never wavered, and he was a kind and patient friend.
We
moved into our own home in 1996, with a big fenced yard. With all
the extra room, I eventually decided we could stand another dog, and so
Hunter came home. Jake was 11 when she came, and he was always very
tolerant of her sometimes over-exuberant antics.
He
was a pretty collie, very tall, with a profuse coat and a tail that waved
continuously. He had an amazing repertoire of 'tricks.' He was
often comical, and always happy.
Jake
was very sweet and gentle, and was the most polite dog I've ever been
blessed with. He was 14 when he left us to go to that special place
God surely keeps for our wonderful dogs.
I miss him. |
